How it begins
The wind, a ragged gasp through the crumbling battlements of Oakhaven Keep, carried the acrid scent of char and fear. Roric Vhurn, his calloused hand resting on the pommel of a sword he hadn't drawn in a decade, watched the distant plumes of smoke billow like bruised thunderheads over the Valerius Marches. Elder Jorn Trakon, his face a roadmap of ancient sorrows, pointed with a gnarled finger toward the darkening horizon. "Another hearth-town extinguished, Roric. The rot spreads faster than any plague." A breathless Brynn Astra, her leather tunic torn and face streaked with the grime of hard riding, burst into the solar, scattering loose scrolls.
