How it begins
The hum of the city grid usually soothed Jian Li, a familiar drone in his bones. Tonight, it felt like a low growl. Rain slicked the rooftop access panel he was wrestling with, the metal bitter against his gloved fingers. His headlamp cut a stark beam through the steam rising from the cooling vents of the power substation below. "Just one more clamp," he muttered, adjusting his grip on the torque wrench. Suddenly, a high-pitched whine sliced through the night, not from the grid, but from somewhere deeper, an unseen frequency that vibrated in his teeth. Below, the chain-link fence separating the substation from the street buckled inwards, sparked.
