How it begins
The sun hammered down on Redemption Gulch, a brutal fist of heat that shimmered off the lone, wide street. Dust, fine as flour, coated everything: the faded awnings of the general store, the empty troughs outside the saloon, the very air Elias Jericho breathed. His badge, a tarnished star, felt heavy on his chest, a constant reminder of the weight he carried. This town, barely a whisper on the map, was a powder keg, and he was the only matchstick not yet lit. A tremor ran through the silence when the general store's door creaked open. Mrs. Agnes Miller, a woman whose face had seen too many seasons of worry, peered out.
